The drills are taking place as tensions between the US and North Korea have been rising in recent months, with North Korea conducting a series of missile tests and threatening to resume nuclear testing.
South Korea routinely denounces the annual Ulchi exercises, calling them a provocation.
North Korea has not yet commented on the drills.
The drills are expected to continue for five days.
