Gavin Newsom Survives California Recall Election

Republican-Led Effort Ends in Defeat

Two-Thirds of Voters Support Newsom

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KRON) – A Republican-led bid to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom ended in defeat Tuesday night. Newsom survived a historic recall election, winning a vote of confidence from two-thirds of voters.

The recall effort, which was backed by the state’s Republican Party, was fueled by dissatisfaction with Newsom’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues. However, Newsom was able to mobilize his base and defeat the recall, thanks in part to strong support from Democratic voters.

The recall election was the second time in California history that a governor has faced a recall vote. The last recall election, in 2003, resulted in the removal of then-Governor Gray Davis and the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
