Be Part of the Plan: Halting and Reversing Biodiversity Loss

The United Nations has designated May 22, 2024, as the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), with the theme "Be Part of the Plan: Halt and Reverse Biodiversity Loss." This theme is a rallying cry for all stakeholders, from governments and businesses to individuals, to take action to protect and restore the Earth's ecosystems and species.

The Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, including the diversity of plants, animals, and microorganisms. It is essential for human well-being, providing us with food, water, medicine, and other resources. Biodiversity also plays a crucial role in regulating the climate, purifying the air and water, and supporting ecosystem services such as pollination and seed dispersal.

However, biodiversity is under threat from human activities such as habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation. As a result, many species are facing extinction, and the overall health of the planet is declining.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

In December 2022, the parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This landmark agreement sets out a series of goals and concrete measures to stop and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. The framework includes targets for protecting and restoring habitats, reducing pollution, and promoting sustainable agriculture and fisheries.
